jacob + sweet 35 = perfectly imperfect portraits

So this is a project i was inspired to do by another photographer ... shot entirely with my Lensbaby Composer & Sweet 35 I wanted to:

1. get to know my sweet 35 a little more
2. capture my son "in the moment".

As {portrait} photographers I feel as if i focus too much on you know having the image in focus than the moment itself so we loose something in the story telling. I wanted it to be more about him than me. & the sweet 35 was the perfect way of doing that. Manually focusing on a 2 year old boy who refused to sit still is a nightmare {try it ... i dare you} ... but it sums up so much of who he is.

So on Tuesday ... my son's second birthday ... it seemed like the perfect way of capturing his day. I focused solely on him at home, in the zoo {mama & Jacob's big day out} & then in the evening when Dada came home & we opened presents & ate cake.

So apologies for my inability to "edit" photos of my son but i hope you enjoy our wonderful day together ...

finding peace ...

This morning i ran ... nothing unusual, i run 4 or 5 days a week. I hunted down a pair of socks (my running socks are left & right footed & i always have an issue finding a pair), pulled on the requisite outfit based on weather conditions & laced up my sneakers, bundled Jacob into the car & headed for base. We generally run on the flight line, they have a dedicated track which is great for the stroller & i find it so peaceful out there. I think there's something ironic in that, a place where planes take off & land, where engines can be heard running at all hours & our course the cars driving round the perimeter road. But the wildlife & the space & the planes bring a sense of peace to me.

I guess that's why i run ... because i find peace out there. Whether i am running with friends, hashing out the problems of the world or alone with just my music & the voices in my head i always finish feeling renewed & energized. Your body loosens up, the muscles stretch out & you find your stride ... it's a feeling of freedom & strength.

But today i didn't feel that ... i forgot my music ... & the head winds were crazy ... & then there was my body, it just felt awkward & ragged like something was missing. & then i realized what was wrong, there was no sense of peace, no feeling like i was at one with everything around me just anger. Anger than someone could have taken this away from so many people.

The running community is both huge & tiny at the same time ... 6 degrees of separation doesn't even stand a chance. & in the past 48 hours i felt so many emotions, gratitude that some of those i love the most weren't in Boston, an immense sadness for the events of Monday afternoon & disbelief that someone could do this.

Runners don't care about your religion, your race or your sexuality, we don't care where you consider home, your gender or your age. In fact we don't even care whether you can run a 7 minute mile or a 12 minute mile because you are runner. You share a small smile with that stranger you pass running in the street, & there are those who push your through the finish line of your first 5k or half marathon. The friends who get up at 0600 in the middle of winter or pouring rain even when you both want to be tucked up in bed. & the 8 minute milers who stay by your side ever step of a long run supporting despite the fact they could have left your ass a long way back.

I am angry that someone tried to take this away from us ... stole some of what we love & replaced it with pain. Angry that innocent lives were taken & that people will never be able to find that peace again when out on the road or through the woods & along the beach. I am angry about the world my son is going to grow up in where violence comes easier than talking. That a simple moment of joy can be ruined for nothing.

I am writing this simple because i need to get it out my system, because i need to find my own sense of peace again in something that has brought me friendship, made me stronger both physically & mentally & makes me happy.

going old school ...

So i admit i haven't been great at this whole blogging thing ... life just kind of you know happened! But here i am today with some pretties to share (& i have a whole lot more waiting to blog about so i should probably get on that). Anyways these are all film ... something i am playing around with right now. I have a huge collection of cameras I want to shoot with & i was lucky enough to be blessed with some free film to test out. So enough talk here are some of my recent favourites ...

These were shot in cambridge one morning in March (i think) ... it's my first time shooting b&w in probably about 10 years. But i love these. They were shot on a Zenit ET that i have discovered comes with a few light leaks but then again i did only pay £20 for it & it has a beautiful lens! & they are shot on Kodak Tri-x ISO 100.

& here's a few from deepest darkest north west England ... The Wirral & Merseyside to be exact. Shot in the past few weeks whilst i was up there "working" (I have so very many pretties to share with you from that trip) on a Lubitel 166B on Kodak Portra 120 at ISO 160.

I do have to admit i am loving the "individuality" that comes with shooting with my film cameras, i never know just what i will get. & with the exception of maybe touching up some "dust" these are all straight out of the camera. I can't wait to print some up for my home (maybe one day i will get to do it by hand again) & possible offer them for sale!

iphone love ...

So i've been a little busy ... hense the lack of blogging ... & i have a mountain of images to edit (i'm like a kid in a candy store) but i also have you know "work" that needs doing so until i get some of the boring out the way no editing for me. Yes yes i know i am a tease but instead i am going to share a few iphone pics from the past couple of days shooting up in Cheshire, on the Wirral & Merseyside (wait except the tree in the snow ... that was Sunday before i made the drive up north). I love my iphone ... it's possible i got it purely for the camera. & i love the "instant" editing ... quick & simple. Way too much fun!Anyways less talk today more photos!

ps. you can find me on instagram just search for me: @oohprettyshiny

Susannah Tucker & her pretty pictures ...

So i figured you guys need something pretty to look at that isn't well mine ... & so i want to share the world of one of my favourite {yes she is one of my favourites ... hehehe i feel like i'm back in school} etsy photographers ... & friend's. Well the kind of friendship that comes from being two photographers half way across the globe from each other. In fact we are taking part in a fun 52 week instagram diptych project based on the fact we are on opposite ends of the world!

Anyways yes i know you are all wondering who this fabulous photographer is ... Well her name is Susannah Tucker & her work is beautiful! I have been a little in awe of her photography for a long time & with the somewhat blah weather we are having right now I am sat here looking at her beautiful new work wishing I was in New Zealand.

Susannah's work has such an incredible dream like quality ... every child hood memory you have stored up in your brain can be seen through her images. I just want to jump into her images ... there is nothing about them you cannot love. The tones are so peaceful & calming & her use of textures is so subtle half the time i don't even notice them. But then that's the way it should be right?

She also has a way with words ... knowing exactly what to match with each image ... i think i could decorate my whole house with her work.

a wonderful instagram series ... leaves me dreaming of summer ...

... beautiful simplicity ...

... & the perfect ending!

I feel so lucky to know such inspirational photographers ... one day we will shoot together! But for the moment i will just drool from afar & spend many an afternoon browsing her etsy store!

cambridge in the fog ...

Ok where were we ... oh yes ... fog ... England ... nature ... & a road trip to Cambridge. Yesterday i attempted to share a whole host of pretty pictures ... but well i failed with my ability to babble & go off on tangents. So today I am taking you on a trip down to Cambridge, one foggy morning in March ... (& way less talking this time i promise) ...

I grew up in Cambridge & whilst i knew it was a beautiful city I believe i took it for granted. Now having returned to England I have 3 or 4 years to explore my homeland, camera in hand & I am working incredible hard at it. Not everyone gets the chance to see the world, travel & walk away with beautiful reminders so i feel as if this is something I have to do. & so often we want the blue skies & the pretty clouds, we forget that beauty isn't necessarily found in those things. So keeping this in mind, a morning spent wandering through a fog filled Cambridge sounded wonderful. & well it was ...

Literally just off the bus I decided to dart onto Christ Piece & saw this beautiful moment ... like something out of Narnia ... oh by the way i should mention now all these images were captured using my Lensbaby Composer Pro & Edge 80 optic.

pretty rain drops seen out the corner of my eye ...

Christ College ...

senate house passage ...

one of those moments you come across that leaves you in awe ...

& just as stunning in colour ...

& the epitome of all things Cambridge.

Cambridge is one of those cities that has a timeless feel ... so much history, it could almost be 1913 instead of 2013.

Ok enough photos for one day (though honestly can you ever get enough) ... I must get back to doing something my husband considers "productive". Have a wonderful day ... & remember that whilst we all get the winter blues you may be surprised some days, so don't think about it before grabbing your camera & heading out because beautiful can be found everywhere!

one foggy morning ...

There are certain things i have grown to love since we made the move back to "blighty" in October ... sticky toffee pudding has become a rather unfortunate stable in our house {but it tastes so good ... we'll just ignore the calorie intake for a moment} ... John Lewis {it's a shoppers paradise but oh so dangerous on the bank account} ... & the morning fog.

I was introduced to the fog by a friend of mine & incredible talented photographer Sasha Holloway of Bleulips ... she takes these incredible portraits in the fog & whilst i am currently not shooting portraits i knew the fog was something I needed to photograph {not want but needed}. So through the winter i spent many a morning capturing the fog.

Well a couple of weeks back I woke up to this beautiful fog ... the kind that sees your eyes light up in the morning. A fog that makes you want to jump in your car & just explore the countryside Camera in hand. Well I made the decision to head to Cambridge that day to try & get the fog in the city on camera.  So bundling Jacob up in the car I first had to make a trip to base ... a trip that {as usual} took 20 minutes longer because i got distracted along the way (but well if you know me that isn't exactly hard).

This tree sits in a field by the side of the road ... un assuming ... i first noticed it in December because of the way the morning light hits the field & have since returned to it time & again. This time i had my "trusty" Lensbaby Composer Pro & Edge 80 to keep me company.

I then made it a whole 100m further down the road before stopping by a local river, the same moody feel capturing my attention. There is something special about England in the fog, I can't explain it but it feels like they go hand in hand, it reminds me of a Jane Austen or Charles Dickens book. Don't get me wrong I adore a beautiful blue sky but this has so much emotion to it, a story waiting to be told. & Well personally the Lensbaby just add that little extra something.

Well having managed to success babble on longer than i intended I will leave you for today ... & post the rest of my photos from Cambridge on the blog later today or maybe tomorrow. I haven't decided.

But before i go let me ask you this ... what is it about where you live that always "gets you" ... turns something ordinary into that something special? Something that goes perfectly with the place you {currently} call home?
